On 29th Novemebr Michel Barnier explained to the European Parliament the conclusions of the Extraordinary European Council of 25 November, where heads of state or government backed the negotiated withdrawal agreement and the political declaration regarding future relations with the UK. In addressing the Parliament the EU’s chief negotiator said it was “the time has come to back the deal.” Please find the press release from the European Parliament HERE.
In line with article 50 of the EU Treaty, the European Parliament is set to vote on the withdrawal agreement in early 2019, before the final vote of the Council. However the UK Parliament is due to vote on the withdrawal agreement on 11th December.
In the meantime the BBC are today reporting that Advocate General Manuel Campos Sanchez-Bordona has ruled that The UK should be able to unilaterally cancel its withdrawal from the EU. The Court of Justice (ECJ) will deliver its final ruling at a later date but this is a significant development as the UK Parliament is set to commence a debate on the withdrawal agreement today.
