On Wednesday 20th February 2019, President Juncker and Prime Minister May met to take stock of their efforts to deliver the UK’s orderly withdrawal from the EU, in line with the process launched by them on 7 February.
Issues that arose in the discussion include:
– Which guarantees could be given with regard to the backstop that underlines once again its temporary nature and give the appropriate legal assurance to both sides.
– The role alternative arrangements could play in replacing the backstop in future.
– Whether additions or changes to the Political Declaration can be made that are consistent with the EU and UK Government positions.
It is important to note that the ‘Political Declaration’ is a non-legally binding piece of text that gives a broad outline of the future relationship between the UK and the EU. You can read this document HERE:
It is expected that President Juncker and Prime Minister Theresa May will resume talks before the end of the month.
